もうすぐ3月11日が来る。
原子力災害から15年という時間が経過することになる。

人はまず自分自身の生活に向き合うべきなのは疑いようはない。
私自身もそうである。
それでも、あまりにも多くの出来事が
矢のように流れていくこの世界で、
記憶をどのように定着させることができるのかを考え、
本作に至った。

これらは、水溶紙にプリントされた写真の束である。
写っているのは、福島県飯舘村の住民が
かつて暮らしていた仮設住宅が解体される場面だ。
生活の痕跡がわずかに残った空間が写されている。

これらの写真は、
保存することもできるし、
水をかけて溶かすこともできる。
溶かすという行為そのものが、
記憶の定着に導くためのフックでもある。
記憶を留め続けるのか、
それとも手放すのか。
その選択は鑑賞者に委ねられている。

それが本作のタイトル
「DIY or not.」 の意味である。


March 11 is approaching once again.
Fifteen years will have passed since the nuclear disaster.

There is no doubt that people should first focus on their own lives.
I am no exception.
Still, in a world where too many events
pass by like arrows in flight,
I began to wonder how memory can truly take root.
This work emerged from that question.

These are bundles of photographs printed on water-soluble paper.
They depict the dismantling of temporary housing
where residents of Iitate Village in Fukushima once lived.
The images show spaces where faint traces of everyday life still remain.

These photographs can be preserved,
or they can be dissolved with water.
The act of dissolving itself becomes a hook
that leads memory to take hold.
Whether to keep the images,
or to let them disappear,
is a choice left to the viewer.

That choice is the meaning behind the title,
“DIY or not.”
